Hunger by Michael Grant

Peer pressure is a big problem for anyone and everyone. Especially if you are peer pressured by an entire community of kids 14 or younger so save them, feed them, and  solve their problems, no matter how important, like death, or how dumb and stupid, like someone taking your mints. That's what it's like to be Sam Temple. He is looked up to as the leader of that FAYZ, the which stands for Fallout Alley Youth Zone. And now he is going insane because of.... who? Let's find out.

There are the minor people who have small problems like stealing someone's mints. Then there are those that are a bit more important, like when a boy killed the dog of two other little girls because he was so hungry. The reason that everyone is starving is because no one wants to do work to get food. They want others, especially Sam, to do the work for them. This pisses Sam off, which isn't good, because he can shoot laser beams from his hands and can fry someone to death. Sam hates working for them because no matter what he does, no one appreciates his work. They just want him to do more for their sake. They are the most selfish kids in the world. It makes me hate them all and wish that they'd just die.      

Then is Computer jack, who wants to turn the telephones on because  people are thinking that he can'y do it. that he is worthless and useless, which makes him mad. this is bad because he can crush anyone within seconds since he has the power of strength. His request annoys Sam because it's  just a waste of time. But Sam needs Jack because he is very smart and good with computers and is very strong.

There is also Albert, who thinks that he can run the town. he is doing things behind Sam's back, like opening a club and making money on his own. this pressures Sam because the last thing he needs is competition. he also doesn't want people to tell him what to do. it just makes things worst for him.       

Then there is Astrid, the girl who he loves, the girl of his dreams. But she is the girl of his nightmares as well. she is the one who forced him to that position and now he can't get down. she wants him to do everything he can to protect her and her brother, Petey, who is autistic. she manipulates him to continue to be the leader of the FAYZ even though he doesn't want to. and he hates her for it. they mostly fight with sam wanting to give up and Astrid pushing him not to. i hate how controlling she is. it seems like she doesn't even like him. i wonder if he'll bother to stay with her in the next book. i sure hope not. she is his biggest fear, or so she would be if it weren't for Caine and others....
